There are many projects where customers request is to test units with kurtosis. Mexico technical center “MTC” can do modal analysis, random vibration analysis and estimate life with Gaussian Random vibration by FEA and fatigue calculation. Then the main aim of this project is to define probabilistic and statistical tools to estimate stress strain values with different Kurtosis values.

In the DOE weapons complex, electrostatic discharge (ESD) poses a hazardous situation when coupled to sensitive high explosive materials. The proposed research and project aims to potentially develop a method for the reduction and mitigation of ESD hazards. Students will be encouraged to use their knowledge, research, and creative abilities throughout the project development to generate, characterize, and mitigate the ESD hazard.

The year is 2029 and transportation companies have optimized their fleets with high-tech computer augmented vehicles that track driver performance metrics. Every driver in the industry is given a rating based on their performance, fostering intense competition between companies and drivers. The fastest and safest drivers are awarded the highest salaries, and every company wants these drivers. Although the trucks are highly automated, drivers and automation technology complement each other. The technology actively trains drivers to improve their performance, and the best drivers are utilized to improve the technology.

FieldMAK is the world's first open-source modular portable laboratory. Users can swap and in and out testing modules to test anything in a backpack, hardcase, or embedded mobile lab system powered by AC, DC, and solar. While we have many potential markets, we are first focused on revolutionizing agriculture in the developing world (by allowing tests to become accessible, including genetic amplification and spectroscopy) and STEM education (by allowing students to perform a variety of experiments rather than read about them. The capstone group assigned to this project shall refine a working prototype of a system capable of swapping out testing modules for a variety of tests.

Analysis of HF communication for mobile applications is of interest. This analysis will include current technology, as well as future direction of this industry. This may include: possible covert antenna design, benefit/analysis of HF waveforms (2G ALE, 3G ALE, Wide Band HF, Clover), vulnerability of HF (jamming, etc), or robust tuner design. High Frequency communication for mobile platforms has many aspects and when fielded must be reliable. This project will cover analysis and design ranging from HF waveforms to covert antenna design to vulnerability of HF.

The thrust-to-weight ratio of a small jet engine is to be increased by increasing the thrust and/or reducing the weight. The weight can be reduced by lowering the weight of the structural and electrical components (such as starter battery and circuit). A small turbojet engine will be modified to increase the thrust and to reduce the weight of the structural and electronic components.

Measuring and monitoring emissions form industrial facilities is necessary to prove compliance with EPA emission standards. Two of the pollutants of interest are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Particulate Matter (PM). However, EPA-approved methods for monitoring these pollutants are inefficient and do not take advantage of current technological advances. Your team must design a sensor array that can be easily attached to a drone to measure VOCs and PM pollution from industrial stack exhaust. Your design must produce accurate, easy to read pollution data for on-demand emissions monitoring.

Develop an instrument driver in Labview or labwindows to automate the oscilloscope keysight MSO. The driver must be able to work under the GPIB, Ethernet and USB buses. The minimum blocks for the driver shall be Initialization, Configuration, Measurement , Deinitialization. The final driver could be delivered in a dll format or labview project library. The driver source code must be provided to Aptiv. The final solution must work for NI TestStand, Vector CANoe , Labview ,Labwindows c#.

With the global introduction of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), sensors with a variety of capabilities are being utilized. There are multiple classes of sensors (acoustic, pressure flow, light, etc.) and many more manufacturers within a sensor class. In order to validate that the performance is consistent within a sensor class given the variety of suppliers, output is collected from running the same test scenarios (injecting the same input, and comparing the results for consistency); the vendor-specific log files are collected and the results compared.

Many high speed experiments rely on derived velocity measurements using conservation of mass calculations with estimated values. This can lead to uncertainties in velocity at target locations which may or may not be acceptable to industry customers. In certain cases, Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) can be used to directly measure the velocity of particles and components. One of the major problems with PDV sensors is reflected ray collection and interpretation. The mechanisms effecting reflected ray collection and interpretation are ray scattering (Diffusion and Reflection), and Absorption of Doppler shifted light. Light scatter by test samples can be highly irregular. Along with scatter another problem that can occur is the absorption of light from test samples which are dark and near black. Regardless of the mechanism the problem boils down to a couple of relatively “simple” ideas; how much of the reflected light is captured, and how the light that is captured is corrected for, based on angle. The effort here is to design a signal computational correction system, and a physical light delivery and collection system.

The project provides wearable patches that can be attached to clothes to wirelessly monitor human movement on a computer. The whole system should be light-weighted, easy to use, and low power. The completed motion tracking system may be useful for first responders and senior care facilities, as well as sports training programs.

Depending on the thermal load, temperature distribution within a heat chamber will change. During component testing in an environmental chamber, the question commonly arises as to where and how to measure temperatures.  What is the thermal distribution within a loaded and unloaded chamber for best determining appropriate test sensor placement? Analysis of single and multi-point thermal distributions, real world modeling of a chamber, as well as different types of thermocouples should be addressed.
