Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of creating an object by building it one layer at a time. AM typically refers to 3D printing. AM enables fabrication of complex geometries and provides many advantages compared to the traditional manufacturing methods. A wide variety of factors (e.g., build direction, cooling rate, feed rate etc.) significantly influence structural quality of components made of AM process. In this project, students will virtually fabricate AM parts the same way as design engineers design and produce 3d-printed parts and investigate the impact of the AM process parameters on microstructure, residual stress, distortions and other post-processing effects which is very difficult, if not impossible, in the physical AM processes.

The objective of this project is to design and build a chile destemmer. You will use a small conveyor that will transport the chile to the destemmer system where the stem of the chile will be removed mechanically or by some other means. The main focus of this project is the process of removing the stem from the chile regardless of the shape of the chile.

Small low-cost jet powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can potentially accomplish missions that are outside the realm of bigger more expensive aircraft. The low thrust-specific fuel consumption of small jet engines when compared to full-size engines provides the motivation for carrying such UAVs under the wing of bigger aircraft and releasing them only in close vicinity of the intended location. The task will be to design a serpentine inlet for our small jet engine. We will do fluid dynamic analysis and structural design in the fall and hopefully some testing in the spring. The test stand that holds the engine will have to be modified. The design shall be tested at NMSU and demonstrated during a visit to Wright Patterson AFB.

In the DOE weapons complex, electrostatic discharge (ESD) poses a hazardous situation when coupled to sensitive high explosive materials. The proposed research and project aims to potentially develop a method for the reduction and mitigation of ESD hazards. Students will be encouraged to use their knowledge, research, and creative abilities throughout the project development to generate, characterize, and mitigate the ESD hazard.

Create a mechanism capable of folding a paper bag to be used as a luminaria bag. The top edge of bag should be folded along the outer edge by 2 inches. Fold should be to the outside. The bag is inserted into the mechanism. The mechanism should then create the 2-inch fold and then flatten the bag for easy stacking. Mechanism does not have to stack the bag.

Use high frequency radio/modems and software defined radio to communicate between stations with one station being a mobile(in transit) station.

HF communication is often the only form of communication left when disaster strikes. HF modems and radios can be expensive but with the advancement of Software Defined Radio(SDR) some of the cost could be mitigated giving greater access to reliable HF communication in times of need. The team will be tasked with programming and operating HF Radios provided by a prominent HF manufacturer as well as programming a Software Defined Radio to act as a modem. In addition to operation of the radios, the antennas will need to be set up by the team in accordance with NMSU safety protocols. This project is an opportunity to learn more about communications (digital and analog), antennas, Software defined radio, electromagnetism and waves and High Frequency communications.

The purpose of this project is to develop a way to efficiently and safely remove oil from the surface or immediate sub-surface of our oceans. What is an efficient and safe way to remove oil from the surface of our ocean with little, none, or positive environmental impact? How much will it cost to produce such an item, and how long will it take to produce it? What precautions need to be taken to prevent biological interference? Will this idea be a stand-alone product or service offered to companies? How quickly can such a product accomplish its goal?

The student team shall design, build, and test a fully integrated sensing device. The designed device will measure and log acceleration and external temperature with synchronous timestamping to a removable flash memory card. It will also contain a novel mechanical acceleration switch that will trigger at a nominal acceleration of 15g.

General Dynamics Mission System

Previous Students designed a ‘Smart Hallway’ System consisting of a sensor suite, control board, LED lighting strips, and power distribution equipment. The system tracked a person moving through the hallway and illuminated them as they moved, tracking their direction and velocity through the hallway.

Building on the work of their peers, Students will reuse and build upon the ‘Smart Hallway’ System to design and build a ‘Smart Room’. The new system shall track at least two people in the room and illuminate them as they move throughout the room and keep them illuminated until they leave the room. It is expected that students will reuse as many components, processes, and designs from the previous system as possible.

Vehicle maintenance and routine repair of trailers is a common occurrence. Trailer skins often need to be removed and resealed by technicians in order to increase vehicle chassis life. We are looking for a team of students to help design tooling that will aid our technicians in more efficiently performing these maintenance tasks. The team would develop, build and physically test all tooling to exercise both technical development and hands on use testing of tooling. This is a great project for students who are looking for projects that are hands on and connect engineering to end user application. The students will interface with our engineering and technician team and together develop ergonomic tooling that will benefit technician efficiency and longevity. This is an opportunity for students to exercise their ability create processes that affect every day work in the industry and make a real change in technician operations.
